A survey of 20th-Century music in the United States including a comprehensive look at roots, jazz, concert, and experimental art-music styles. Influences of earlier American traditions and from other continents will be traced. The relationships between America's diverse modern music and its complex society will be explored. The course does not require any previous music experience or the ability to read music. This course satisfies WMU Essential Studies Level 2: Exploration and Discovery – Societies and Cultures Category. This course also meets the Diversity and Inclusion student learning outcome.
